10 things to consider when travelling during pregnancy

Just because a woman is pregnant is not enough reason for her to stay cooped up inside her home. She needs to see variation in her environment and be able to relax. Travelling to different places is one way she can do this. On contrary to what most people believe, pregnant women are actually allowed to travel even to other countries. However, the travel is not with caution on her part. Here are some considerations that a pregnant woman must ponder on when travelling:

  1. Ask your Ob-Gyn about your condition and the status of your pregnancy. Women who are in low-risk pregnancy states have the liberty to travel. Those who present some complications with the pregnancy need to simply rest at home and avoid travelling for the time being.
  2. Schedule your trips where you would not miss your prenatal schedules. During the first trimester prenatal visits are once in each month. On the second trimester it becomes more frequent as in every other week. On the third trimester it is once a week. Trips are advised during periods in between visits. Prenatal check up should not be missed because the progress of the pregnancy is being monitored if it is normal or not. It is also a time when vaccinations are given for pregnant women.
  3. Bring your medical records with you on your travel. In case something goes wrong with you during your travel, having a copy of your medical records would aid new doctors on how to proceed with your case as it serves as a vital source of information regarding you and the status of your pregnancy.
  4. Bring all your medications during your travel. Most pregnant women who have maintenance medications are considered at a high-risk pregnancy state. However, if travelling is really necessary, it is best that these medications be present and easy to reach during the travel. Airport security has policies regarding medication inside planes. However as long as you present your case thoroughly there should be no problems at all.
  5. Get a travel insurance. The insurance company will take care of you should something happen during your travel.
  6. Avoid stressful activities during your travel. You can enjoy all the sights and places of wherever it is that you are travelling as long as you do not wear yourself out.
  7. Be sure to eat right on your travel. Avoid eating foods from questionable sources to avoid the risk of contracting a disease in unique in a foreign country.
  8. Avoid unsafe activities. While dare-devil activities are part of the fun of travelling. On your current state of pregnancy it is best to refrain from them.
  9. Rest. You travelled to relax but not to bring more stress to yourself. Do rest in between periods of activity so that you do not tire yourself out and lead to unwanted complications.

10. If you are already on your 3rd trimester, most especially on the last month before term, it is best not to travel anymore. Some airline policies have restrictions pregnant women on their third trimester in boarding the plane.
